The Society of Sri Lankan Engineers & Scientists in the UK held their fourth Annual Ball at the Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel on 3rd September. The Deputy Sri Lankan High Commissioner, Mr Amza and Mrs Amza were among the distinguished guests who attended the dance.
After a welcome drink, the President Vithanage Dhanaratne (Dhane) and his wife, Mala, formally received the guests with the president presenting each lady with a red rose. After a sumptuous three course meal, the secretary of the Society Dr Keerthi Devendra invited the president to deliver his welcome speech. After his short speech the president opened the dance floor with a waltz with his good lady to be followed by the enthusiastic dancers.
Denzil and Suresh with their band Breeze, kept guests dancing during the whole evening with their repertoire of scintillating music except during short breaks when Entry Draws, Table Draws, and Raffle Draws were held.
It was a pleasant surprise for Neil De La Harpe when the President announced that he was the recipient of an Honorary Associate Membership of the Society for his services. Vice Patron Leslie Gunaratne handed over the certificate to Neil to the applause of the guests.
A new additional feature to the program included a short set of current chart hits for those young as well as those young at heart to let down their hair and dance.
It was the early hours of the following day when the event was brought to a close after a Vote of Thanks by Kumar De Silva and the singing of national anthems, when all the satisfied guests reluctantly started heading home.
